Manifesto
Sex-based differences in cardiovascular disease have traditionally been ignored and women are still under-recognized and under-treated. As a consequence, they are underrepresented in research, clinical trials and publications. For Corazón de Mujer it is a priority to raise public awareness of this problem and to make women aware of their self-care. Different actions have been structured along these lines:
MOVE YOUR HEART
Physical activity is essential for the care of our heart. However, the latest Sports Habits Survey indicates that only 17.3% of women exercise daily and more than 50% do not even exercise once a month. Although the figures improve in the percentage of women who walk or stroll daily (5 out of 10), there are many who do not include any type of exercise in their daily lives.
In 2023, on the occasion of World Heart Day, Move Your Heart was launched. An initiative to raise awareness of exercise as a tool for heart care, which on this occasion focused on Yoga as a heart-healthy activity.
NOURISH YOUR HEART
Another of the key pillars for maintaining good cardiovascular health is diet, which helps to prevent many of the risk factors, such as obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes. According to different studies, the Spanish female population is abandoning the healthy guidelines of the Mediterranean diet for an unbalanced calorie pattern. Corazón de Mujer will make different proposals to educate society on good eating habits.
LISTEN TO YOUR HEART
In terms of prevention, the ideal scenario would be one in which education in heart-healthy lifestyle habits would begin at school, primary care physicians would become more involved in the recognition of risk factors, and women would identify their own symptoms associated with this disease. Also to achieve more Women’s Specific Units to identify, diagnose, treat and prevent CVD, and to contribute to research. In this line of action, informative talks and training courses will be organized to inform and train on this objective.
VALUE YOUR HEART
Corazón de Mujer focuses on the need for preventive tests and check-ups. Women often suffer atypical symptoms, different from those of men, which can be confused with other pathologies such as anxiety or chronic fatigue. They are also more susceptible to stress and tend to delay their visit to the hospital, which makes early detection and treatment of CVD more difficult. Without forgetting that these pathologies can affect women at any stage of their lives, with age the risk increases as menopause increases the rate of heart disease.
STUDY YOUR HEART
At Corazón de Mujer we are committed to investing time and resources in research to contribute to the advancement of the healthcare system and provide answers to patients’ health expectations. In a reality in which women are underrepresented in clinical trials and publications, it is vital to promote studies that promote the advancement of medicine and the development of new drugs and technologies for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of female cardiovascular diseases.
ADD YOUR HEART
In Corazón de Mujer’s struggle to minimize deaths due to cardiovascular causes, different awareness campaigns will be carried out, seeking a massive impact and the collaboration of the greatest possible number of people. The aim is to generate a word of mouth based on medical explanations that generate a global knowledge of this problem and the possible solutions to address it. Every person aware of the problem could be one less death.
